An Accra court has finally brought to a close the years-long legal battle between the iconic Black Stars legend, Asamoah Gyan, and his former wife, Gifty. In a ruling on Tuesday, October 31, the Accra court made some significant decisions that will have a lasting impact on both parties involved.
The court’s ruling solidified the paternity of the three children born to Asamoah Gyan and Gifty, putting an end to any doubts. To ensure the well-being of his children, Asamoah Gyan has been ordered to pay GH¢25,000 per month, covering their basic upkeep. However, this monthly allowance does not encompass specific expenses such as school fees, medical and dental care, flight tickets, and other miscellaneous costs.
Gifty Gyan is to receive ownership of several valuable assets previously shared with Asamoah Gyan. These assets include Asamoah Gyan’s UK mansion, a luxurious four-bedroom house located in Spintex, Accra, and two cars: a BMW and an Infiniti. Furthermore, Gifty Gyan is granted ownership of land earmarked for a fuel station in Prampram.
As news of the court’s decision spread, Asamoah Gyan responded with a cryptic message, leaving the public to speculate about his feelings regarding the ruling.
The legal saga unfolded when Asamoah Gyan filed for divorce, initially denying the paternity of their three children and requesting a DNA test to establish the truth. The subsequent DNA results confirmed the children’s biological connection to the renowned footballer, ending any dispute about their parentage.
In its judgment, the court recognized that the marriage between Gifty Gyan and Asamoah Gyan, celebrated in 2013, was valid and still in effect, despite an earlier paper marriage in 2002 when Gifty was just 17 years old. The court, however, issued a decree of nullity, effectively annulling the 2013 marriage.
Furthermore, the court acknowledged that the evidence overwhelmingly supported the fact that Gifty Gyan and Asamoah Gyan had been involved in an intimate relationship since 2003, leading to the birth of two children before they formalized their union through an ordinance marriage.
Regarding Gifty Gyan’s substantial contributions to the acquisition of Asamoah Gyan’s properties, the court deemed her caregiving responsibilities and living arrangements with their children as deserving of a share in these assets.
Asamoah Gyan’s illustrious football career began in 2003 with the Ghana Premier League club, Liberty Professionals. During this time, he scored ten goals in sixteen matches. He then spent three seasons with Serie A club Udinese, netting fifteen times in 53 league matches. In 2008, Gyan made a move to Ligue 1 club Rennes, scoring fourteen goals in forty-eight league matches over two seasons.
In 2010, Asamoah Gyan transferred to Premier League club Sunderland, breaking the club’s transfer record and scoring ten goals in thirty-four Premier League matches during his two seasons there. His international career was equally impressive, as he represented Ghana at the 2006, 2010, and 2014 FIFA World Cups. With six goals, he holds the distinction of being the top African goalscorer in the history of the World Cup. Additionally, Gyan participated in the 2004 Summer Olympics and seven Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, helping Ghana achieve third-place in 2008 and runner-up positions in 2010 and 2015.
