A man known as Kosi Ugo recently stirred controversy with a statement on Facebook, expressing an unsettling sentiment regarding the gruesome deaths of young women at the hands of their boyfriends for ritualistic purposes. Ugo claimed to experience “unexplainable joy” when such heinous acts occur, asserting that this perverse joy is beyond the reach of money or material wealth.
Kosi Ugo’s comments came to light following the tragic death of Justina Nkang, a 300-level student at the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT). Justina’s life was brutally cut short when she fell victim to her boyfriend, who callously murdered her and dismembered her body. Her lifeless body was discovered at her assailant’s residence on Road 15, NTA Road, Port Harcourt, after she had been declared missing for several days. In his controversial Facebook post, Ugo not only appeared to revel in the death of young women like Justina but also implied that he would applaud the culprits for their macabre deeds. He wrote, “Every time a girl is killed by her Yahoo boyfriend and it makes rounds on social media, there’s this unexplainable joy I feel in my heart that money cannot buy. I always feel like looking for the boy to shake his hand and thank him for a job well done. I know some of you’re currently wearing your Yahoo boyfriend’s oversized polo without pants and typing RIP, but you all will keep learning the hard way.”
Unsurprisingly, this post met with strong condemnation and outrage from the public. In an attempt to clarify his stance and make amends, Ugo later issued an apology on Facebook. He attempted to shed light on his perspective, explaining that his emotional reaction had been triggered by the tragic story of Justina. He shared how he had, in the past, championed the cause of women, standing up for their rights and defending them. He revealed that the news of Justina’s death had deeply affected him.
Ugo acknowledged that his initial post had been insensitive and inappropriate, expressing regret for victim-blaming and recognizing the gravity of a crime, regardless of the motives behind it. He said, “I’m deeply sorry to everyone I’ve hurt with that post and I pray this young girl’s soul finds rest. God bless all of you.”
